From Impossible to Possible: How 15 Adults Conquered KCSE Through Virtual Learning

I'm writing this with sincere gratitude to everyone who made this journey possible. It all started in May 2025, when I was assigned to handle adult learners in the secondary section; this was a new challenge on an entirely different scale. Most adult learners were accustomed to basic literacy programs with no formal exams. Only a handful had progressed to Class 8 and sat for their KCPE exams. That was manageable.

But this? This was different. I faced a real challenge: How do I prepare adults for KCSE exams when these students, due to their circumstances, hadn't had enough time to cover Form 1, 2, and 3 content, yet had already registered for the national exams? As I contemplated the enormity of the task, I almost convinced myself it was impossible. But as a teacher, I kept teaching, encouraging, and giving them hope. We started with just five learners, and slowly, the numbers grew.

The Turning Point: Martin's Story

One day, a learner named Martin joined our school. He had one of the most demanding schedules I'd ever encountered. He left for work before 4:00 AM and didn't finish until around 3:00 PM. That was the only window he had for classes.

This presented another problem. Our classes ended at noon to give adults time for their other responsibilities: opening businesses, managing households, caring for families. Adult learners juggle incredible demands: work, business, family obligations, children depending on them. It's a constant balancing act, and I was asking them to add academics to that mix.

So I waited at the center until 3:00 or 4:00 PM just to teach Martin. By the time he arrived, he was exhausted. The traffic was brutal, and he'd have to fight through it again on his way home. Meanwhile, I was commuting daily from Murang'a to Nairobi which is equally exhausting.

After several attempts, an idea struck me: Why not move classes online? We could eliminate commute time, avoid traffic, and help students feel more energized and focused on learning. Martin agreed to try it. He installed WiFi, repaired his old computer, and we were ready.

Building ThinkDifferent Virtual School

I had no roadmap. All I knew was that Google Meet could work for projecting lessons. I vaguely remembered online classes during COVID using Google Classroom. So I started experimenting, improving each day through trial and error.

Now, we have a fully functioning virtual school. Most adult learners say it's the best alternative to physical classes. Learning from home improves focus and convenience. We save precious time, and for adults, time is money. Two hours of online work equals a week's worth of physical classes in terms of coverage and efficiency.

Watching our first 15 learners graduate from ThinkDifferent Virtual School has been an honor. These pioneers trusted an experiment that became their pathway to academic success.

The Pioneers

I cannot forget to thank: Martin Onyango, Hellen Wamuyu, Rosewinne Kimani, Mary Mbatha, Alfred Orutu, Carol Njoroge, Hilda Chari, Joy Mutua, Marion Livondo, Stacy, Milly, Ann Chepkemoi, David Iguta, Josephat Mwangi, and Ann. Thank you for believing in this experiment.

Flexibility and Innovation

The online format allowed us to introduce multiple time slots:

  • Morning classes: 5:00–7:00 AM, before work
  • Evening classes: 7:00–9:00 PM, after work
  • Weekend sessions: Sundays, 5:00–7:00 PM

This flexibility was only possible through virtual learning.

The experimentation continued throughout. We tested PowerPoint presentations, videos, pre-recorded classes, and AI tools. It's been a journey of constant testing and refining, one I genuinely enjoy.

The Reality of Teaching Adults

Teaching adults means competing for attention with urgent phone calls, thoughts about siblings and spouses, rent payments, job pressures, demanding bosses, and children's school fees. Their attention span rivals that of a goldfish not because they don't care, but because their responsibilities are overwhelming.

Yet these pioneers of ThinkDifferent have proven that online learning is here to stay. They've changed the narrative, and I couldn't be prouder.
