Want to sit for KCSE, but you're not in school? You can do it as a private candidate. Here's everything you need to know.
What is a Private Candidate?
You're taking the exam on your own, not through a regular school. This works if you:
- Want to improve your previous grades
- Missed taking KCSE before
- Are an adult going back to finish your education
Registration opens: February to March 2025
Can You Register?
You need three things:
1. KCPE Certificate - You must have completed primary school
2. Three Years Gap - Your KCPE must be at least 3 years old (if you did KCPE in 2022, you can register for 2025)
3. Foreign Certificate? - Get an "Equation Letter" from KNEC first
Documents You Need
Take these to your Sub-County Education Office:
- National ID (or passport, or birth certificate + ID waiting card)
- KCPE certificate (certified copy)
- 2 passport photos (300 x 300 pixels)
- Entry form (download from the KNEC website, fill 3 copies)
Which Subjects Should You Take?
Must take:
- English
- Kiswahili
- Mathematics
Pick 2 sciences:
- Biology, Physics, Chemistry, or General Science
Pick 1 humanities:
- History, Geography, or Religious Education
Total: 7 to 9 subjects
Important: If you take less than 7 subjects, you won't get a new mean grade.
How Much Does It Cost?
KES 7,200 (approximately)
Pay through:
- e-Citizen platform, or
- KNEC bank accounts (National Bank, KCB, Equity, Co-op Bank)
Don't register late - the penalties are expensive!
Registration Steps
Step 1: Download the form from the KNEC website
Step 2: Visit your Sub-County Education Office with all documents
Step 3: They assign you an exam center (usually a nearby school)
Step 4: They upload your details to the KNEC portal
Step 5: Check everything is correct (name, subjects, etc.)
Taking Practical Subjects?
If you're doing Agriculture, Home Science, or Computer Studies, you need a school for the practical parts. Get a letter from the school Principal before registering.
